Relationships between Musical Audio, Perceived Qualities and Motoric Responses – a Pilot Study

چکیده
The paper describes a pilot experiment in which quantitative and structural relationships between auditory stimuli, perceived qualities and motoric responses to music are investigated. In a previous study [16] a 3-dimensional semantic space of perceived qualities was extracted from the data of a group of hundred students that evaluated sixty musical excerpts (each thirty seconds long). Stepwise multiple regression then revealed significant relationships between these three dimensions and audio cues. Valence adjectives correlate with number of onsets, tempo and harmonicity. Dominance was related to roughness and loudness. Less good results have been obtained with Arousal but this is explained by the fact that the method is calling for cognitive evaluation whereas arousal adjectives may call upon personal emotional engagements. The present pilot study aimed at extending this methodology to motoric behavioral responses. For this aim, cognitive and motoric responses to all sixty musical excerpts were recorded with a computer mouse from seven subjects. The study aimed at finding correlations between motoric behavior and cognitive evaluation, as well as between motoric behavior and audio features. Although significant correlations were found between perceived qualities and audio cues, no significant correlations have been found between perceived qualities and motoric cues, nor among motoric and audio cues. This may be due to the kind of feature extraction used for the motoric behavioral data: although they proved to be useful in other contexts, they were inappropriate for summarization over the entire musical excerpt. Despite the negative outcome at this stage of the research, the described experiment revealed new methodological and technical issues which can probably be solved. On a broader scale we performed this study as an initial step in a research program on the motoric annotation of perceived musical qualities. In the near future similar related experiments will be carried out using 2-D an 3-D haptic and digital interfaces.

Perceived Match between Visual Parameters and Auditory Correlates: an Experimental Multimedia Investigation
This paper investigates the relationship between the auditory and visual components of an audio-visual (A-V) composite. Participants (N=28) were asked to rate the perceived degree of “match” between A-V components in a series of randomly presented composites. Manipulated audio parameters included pitch, loudness, timbre, and duration, while visual parameters included color, vertical location, s...
متن کاملEffects of pitch and timing expectancy on musical emotion
Pitch and timing information work hand in hand to create a coherent piece of music; but what happens when this information goes against the norm? Relationships between musical expectancy and emotional responses were investigated in a study conducted with 40 participants: 20 musicians and 20 non-musicians. Participants took part in one of two behavioural paradigms measuring continuous expectancy...
متن کاملAuditory-nerve responses predict pitch attributes related to musical consonance-dissonance for normal and impaired hearing.
Human listeners prefer consonant over dissonant musical intervals and the perceived contrast between these classes is reduced with cochlear hearing loss. Population-level activity of normal and impaired model auditory-nerve (AN) fibers was examined to determine (1) if peripheral auditory neurons exhibit correlates of consonance and dissonance and (2) if the reduced perceptual difference between...
متن کاملThe Role of Emotion and Context in Musical Preference
The powerful emotional effects of music increasingly attract the attention of music information retrieval researchers and music psychologists. In the past decades, a gap exists between these two disciplines, and researchers have focused on different aspects of emotion in music. Music information retrieval researchers are concerned with computational tasks such as the classification of music by ...

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between audio descriptors for groove-based electronic dance music (EDM) and raters' perceived cognitive, affective, and psychomotor responses. From 198 musical excerpts (length: 15 sec.) representing 11 subgenres of EDM, 19 low-level audio feature descriptors were extracted. A principal component analysis of the feature vectors indicated...
